Catamarans in Cienfuegos

The province of Cienfuegos lies in the central southern part of the island, bordering the province of Matanzas on the west, Villa Clara on the north, that of Santi Spiritus on the east, and on the south with the Caribbean sea. Its capital is the beautiful town of Cienfuegos, built on the edges of Jagua Bay, and which is called, with good reason, the Southern Pearl, or the City of the Sea.

It is the smallest province in Cuba, and that with the least coastline. It is Cuba’s third most important port, and first in regard to sugar exports.. The fort of Our Lady of the Angels of Jagua, built to defend the city from pirates, dominates the entry to the bay. It has a long strand of 2 km, which opens onto the main street of the city, the Prado, where it meets the Avenue of the Cienfuegueros. Here one can admire busts of the city’s most illustrious personalities, the park of the Luisa Theatre, the coloured facades, and the beautiful columned arches. Another park, the Jose Martí, boasts the city’s most striking architecture, with buildings from the XIX century and the beginnings of the XX century, considered as National Monuments.
The province of Cienfuegos is predominantly flatland, only 15% of its surface area rising above 100 metres in altitude, and this higher land concentrated in the southwest, in the area of the Escambray Sierra, belonging to this province. The geography of Cienfuegos is characterised by the Bay of Jagua, without a doubt the major geographical element of the territory, and the fulcrum of the province’s life.
