Catamarans in Maldives

The Maldives is a country in the Indian Ocean, in the southern Asia, lying to the southwest of Sri Lanka and India, at about 450 km south of the Deccan peninsula, comprising 1,196 islands, of which 203 are inhabited. They are grouped in 26 atolls, each of which bears the name of one or two letters of the Thaana script. The country’s name stems from the Sanskrit, in which Mal means thousands and Diva, islands; i.e. thousands of islands.

Its major tourist resource lies in its beaches, the sea and the coral reefs.

The Maldives has a moderate tropical climate, due to the omnipresence of the Indian Ocean, which results in an almost constant temperature all year round. The temperature rarely drops below 25ºC. The climate here is marked by the monsoons, typical tropical and equatorial rains.

There are two important periods: the “dry” monsoon in winter (iruvai) which blows from the northeast from November to March, which is the coolest time, and the wet summer monsoon (hulhangu) which blows from the southwest from May to November. This latter is marked by more violent winds and more rain. In the intermediate periods, around mid April and at the end of November, the meteorological conditions are more benign and the waters reach their maximum clarity. The humidity is much lower during the winter monsoon.
