Data produced by the World Tourism Organisation shows that Spain receives more foreign tourists than any other country in the world, with the exception of France, and enjoys a 7% share of the international tourism market, placing it ahead of the USA and Italy.


Catalonia is Spain’s most popular tourist destination. The 15 million tourists who visited Catalonia in 2006 accounted for 25.3% of all those who travelled to Spain in the year in question. The Balearic Islands are Spain’s second-ranked tourist destination, with 10.1 million visitors in 2006.


According to the World Tourism Organisation’s forecasts, the number of foreign tourists visiting Spain is set to rise by a yearly average of 5% over the next 2 decades. This means that Spain can expect an influx of 75 million foreign tourists in the year 2020, almost 20 million more than in 2005.
