Montenegro is a state in the Balkan Peninsula, on the shores of the Adriatic Sea. This small state has a surface area of 13.812 km², and borders with Albania, Bosnia y Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Kosovo. The capital is the city of Podgorica.

Montenegro has many important historical and cultural sites, including heritage from the Pre-Romanic, Gothic and Baroque periods. The coastal region of Montenegro is especially famous for its religious monuments, these including the Cathedral of San Tryphon in Kotor, the San Lucas basilica (more than 800 years old), Our Lady of the Rocks (Škrpjela), the Savina Monastery, and others.

Podgorica, the capital, and the former royal capital of Cetinje are the most important artistic and cultural centres in the country.

Montenegro’s climate depends directly on its geographical characteristics. Thus, the Mediterranean climate predominates along the coast, while a continental climate reigns in the rest of the territory due to the screen of the Dinarian Alps, which impedes the advance of the maritime influence in the interior. The summers are long and dry, whereas the winter tends to be short and wet. The country’s relief allows the arrival of waves of intense heat in the interior around Podgorica, one of the warmest cities in the Balkan Peninsula.
