Gulets in Corsica

Corsica is the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean, and probably that which has the most varied scenery. For this reason it is known as “L’île de beauté” (Island of Beauty). The high mountains of the interior give out to sandy beaches beside an azure coast with long, white strands.

Extending in a north-south direction, the island is 183km long and 85km wide. The cape of Corsica, outermost point of a thin peninsula 40km long, sticking out into the gulf of Génova, is its most outstanding feature, and the mountains are omnipresent on the island.

Between three quarters of a million and a million tourists visit Corsica every year due to a warm climate, even in winter, and to a natural scenery barely paralleled in Europe. Nowhere in the Mediterranean can one find better beaches, or bays with crescent shaped beaches of fine sand and transparent water, or indeed a coastal scenery more stunning than the granite cliffs of the west coast.

The influx of tourists, who in number now exceed the local island population, has nevertheless not ruined the place. There are few tourist conglomerations or grand constructions, and those that exist are found only in the major cities.

Corsica is a jewel bathed in sunlight. The island is fascinatingly pretty with its turquoise coves, white sandy beaches, and paths through olive and orange groves. One must visit the Citadel of Bonifacio, hanging 70 metres above the sea, embedded in a great rock dramatically overhanging the sea in perpendicular white limestone cliffs, and not miss the St. Nicolas Place. This square from the XIX century contains a series of “Western” style cafes and on Sunday mornings a flea market, as well as summer concerts in the shadow of the great statue of Napoleon. Filitosa is not to be missed, one of the most famous prehistoric settlements, where a museum and archaeological remains, offer an introduction to an understanding of the prehistoric era.

Sandy beaches and rocky coves are characteristic of the entire coastline up to Ajaccio, Napoleón’s birthplace and the islands capital. Its sidewalk cafes and palm-lined boulevards fill with tourists in summer.

Thanks to its Mediterrenean climate, Corsica enjoys a mean annual temperature of 12ºC (which varies according to altitude) Normally from June to September the thermometer passes 25ºC and in the hottest times reaches 30ºC. With an average of 15ºC the low temperatures are also agreeable, sometimes rising to 20ºC between March and October. Winter in the mountains can be quite severe, and snow remains on some summits throughout the year.
