Boats in Cape Verde

The archipelago of Cabo Verde is situated in the Atlantic Ocean, at 600km from the coast of Senegal. It has a surface area of 4033 square kilometres, and is formed by 10 volcanic islands and 5 islets. The principal islands are spread out like a fan, and are divided in two groups in respect to their wind orientation: those of Barlovento (Boa Vista, Sal, Santo Antao, Sao Vicente, Sao Nicolau and Santa Luzia – uninhabited), and those of Sotavento (Maio, Santiago, Brava and Fogo). They are mountainous islands of volcanic origin. Mount Fogo, at 2,829 metres is the highest point of the archipelago.

Tourism is one of the principal economic resources of the archipelago. The friendly nature of its people, its climate, and its spectacular beaches of fine sand bathed by the turquoise-blue waters all go to make Cabo Verde a welcoming and secure destination, full of contrasts.

The Cabo Verde islands are found west of the Sahel (the savannah area between the Sahara desert and tropical Africa.) For this reason their climate is termed Dry-Tropical, a temperate dry tropical climate with low rainfall. Cabo Verde’s temperature could be called perfect, settling between 20ºC in winter and 25ºC in summer, with a mean annual temperature of 24ºC.

As an archipelago it has various ports, the principal one being Mindelo on Sao Vicente. Two ferry routes between the islands are running..
