Huahine is one of the Leeward Islands and part of the archipelago of the Society Islands in French Polynesia. Positioned 175 km to the west of Tahiti, Huahine is the most easterly of the group of islands.
Huahine comprises two mountainous peninsulas, namely Huahine Nui (Big Huahine) and Huahine Iti (Little Huahine). The island, which has a total surface area of 75 km², is completely surrounded by a coral reef at an average distance of 2 km offshore, and has a narrow lagoon accessible via two easterly and two westerly inlets.
Huahine’s main economic activities are tourism, fishing, vanilla cultivation and copra production.
The name Huahine literally means “female sexual organs”, although it could probably be translated as “pregnant woman”, as the outline of Mount Tavaiura resembles a pregnant woman lying down.
