Samos belongs to the archipelago of the Espóradas, in the northern Aegean, and lies between the island of Kios and the Dodecanese archipelago. The island of Samos is separated from the Anatolian coast and from Cape Micala by a strait of hardly 1,8 km. Along the coastline, between the rather inaccessible cliffs, appear open plains.

In the modern port of Samos with its two small quays and a promontory to the south of the Kastro, one finds a great number of points of archaeological interest (monasteries, chapels), and picturesque spots.

Samos enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate. In summer the days are long and the temperatures high; very often a refreshing breeze blows in at the end of the day, especially in the coastal zone and in the north of the country.
