Faro is a town in Portugal, capital of the district of the same name, and of the region of the Algarve. Its municipality stretches to 201,31 km². Divided into 6 parishes, the municipality borders to the north and west with São Brás de Alportel, to the east with Olhão, to the west with Loulé and to the south with the Atlantic Ocean.

An important tourist centre, it has its own international airport, and is home to many outstanding examples of monumental heritage: the Church of Carmen, the gothic Cathedral, the Estoi Palace, walls, squares etc. It is also the seat of the Algarve University.
The Algarve contains some splendid beaches and natural scenery, and is the Portuguese province most visited by tourists. Its highest landmark is the Sierra de Monchique. One of Europe’s largest tourist complexes lies in the Algarve: Vilamoura, close to the beach at Falésia (in the municipality of Loulé).
Faro’s climate has four well-defined seasons in terms of temperature and rainfall. The lowest winter temperatures never go below freezing, and the maximums in summer rarely surpass 35ºC. The temperate climate, the beaches and the sun make Faro a popular summer holiday spot, and indeed during this season some 5 million tourists per year pass through.
