Boats in Denmark

At only an average of 35metres above sea level, Denmark is one of Europe’s flattest lands. Its territory divides into two parts: the continental peninsula of Jutland, and the islands, including Seeland and Fyn, which comprise one third of its total surface area. The summers, typically continental, are relatively warm and rainy. The land is intensively cultivated, despite the cold winters. Denmark is a producer of fishing products and has an intense maritime activity. The rather serious nitrate and phosphate contamination of the North Sea is caused mainly by the effluent of the rivers from Central and Eastern Europe.

In Denmark summer lasts from June to September, while winter is from December to March and is generally wet, often with below-zero temperatures. The coldest month is February. Spring and summer are mild with pleasant temperatures. The Faeroe Islands are influenced by a warm current, which renders the climate milder than one would expect at these latitudes. The sky is often overcast and there is rain and wind throughout the year. Winter temperature stays around 3ºC, and summers are cold with little sun. As for clothing, light cotton clothes are adequate for summer, but overcoats for snow and low temperatures are needed in the winter.

An alternative destination that is visited seldom is the Faeroe Isles, between Scotland and Iceland, which surprise the visitor with a marvellous landscape, and innumerable flocks of seabirds.

One might follow the route of castles along the north coast of Seeland, where mention must be made of Hamlet’s quote” to be or not to be” before the castle at Kronborg, or the discovery of the Jutland peninsula coast. It is worthwhile making a detour to Louisiana, the museum of modern art in Humlebaek, in the north of Seeland. You’ll love it not only for its art collection, but also for its setting, including its architecture and its cultural offer, which includes a cinema, concerts, and a café.

Denmark is a queen among islands of which there are more than 500 in total with 4600 miles of coastline. The sea is never more than 45 minutes away. In the past the Danes only crossed the waters separating the islands in boats; today bridges and tunnels abound. Spectacular views are never far away.
