Boats in Sardinia

The island of Sardinia, Sardegna in Italian, is situated to the southeast of Italy, south of the island of Corsica, separated from this latter by by the Straits of Bonefacio. The paradisiacal island comprises five regions (Gallura, Sassarese, Nuoresse, Oristanese and Cagliaritano). The highest peak of its mountainous relief is Gennargentu , 1834 metros high, and along the coast one finds beaches and crystal water, all adding up to a typical Mediterranean sea-based culture.

The population nucleus and island capital is Cagliari, in the south of Sardinia. The craftwork is evident all over the island; its important ceramic works accompanied by woodcarving, basketry, and traditionally styled fabrics from grand textile mills. Gastronomically speaking, one is struck by its large selection of cheeses (vaccini, ricotte, pecorino sardo, pecorino romano, molli de pecora, gioddu, fiore sardo and cannestrati), which range from a strong, rich taste to mild cheeses for savouring with honey, another of the local products. Similarly with the wine, red, white and rosé wines all offer good quality, as of course does the pasta such as noodles or lasagne.

The Bonifacio strait and the many islands within it comprise one of the most beautiful corners for navigation in the Mediterranean.

The sea cuts into the coast, forming deep fiords ideal for anchoring and spending quiet nights onboard, although, if preferred, one can find glamorous marinas such as Porto Cervo, where everyone seems to have appeared directly from a fashion show, or escaped from a tale of princes and fairies, to enjoy the bars, discotheques and restaurants. Winds are guaranteed every morning between the islands of Caprera, Santa María or the Magdalena, but the archipelago softens the impact of the waves, offering a good breeze over a level, luminous sea, ideal conditions for sailing easily and swiftly. And here one can spend days, sailing speedily, swimming in clean turquoise waters, flanked by pine trees, and the nights quietly anchored, or partying in the lively, elegant coastal ports: a perfect combination in an outstanding natural environment.
