Malta is a small, densely populated island in the south of Europe. It is formed by an archipelago in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Italy, and north of Libya.
It comprises the three inhabited islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino (Malta, Ghawdex and Kemmuna respectively, in Maltese) and a fourth small island beside Comino, called Cominotto Islet, which is not inhabited. The largest of these islands is Malta itself. Along the coast one finds many bays with good harbours. The highest point is on the island of Malta, and is called Ta'Dmejrek at 253 m, near Dingli.
At the present time the tourism industry is one of the main sources of income for the islanders. One should visit the Cathedral of St. John, the Fine Arts Museum in La Valeta, the Archeological Museum, the Saint Elmo Fortress, and the Museum of the Inquisition. At nights the town of San Giljan is full of restaurants, nightclubs, and discotheques, and one can party until the early hours of the morning. In Gozo, one can appreciate the main part of the Prehistoric Temples of Malta, rated as a World Heritage site.
The climate is temperate Mediterranean with rainy but pleasant winters (around 14ºC) and dry, warm summers (around 25ºC). In actual fact, there are really only two seasons, which makes the islands attractive to tourists especially during the warmer months.
