Te Key West is the capital of Monroe County, Florida (USA.), with around 25,000 inhabitants. The city lies on the same island as the Florida Keys.

Key West was established in 1912 as the last and southernmost island of the railway network on the Florida east coast. Even before this the income per head, based on the exploitation of shipwrecks, and the commercialisation of cigars and sponges, was the highest in the whole of Florida. With the building of various bridges by Henry M. Flagler, thus joining the island to the mainland rail network, the place thrived, likewise as a port lying as it does at only 145km from Cuba. It is the most eastern and southerly point on the mainland of the States, and is famous for its sunsets.

Ernest Hemingway lived for some years in Key West from 1928 on, and his former residence is now the Hemingway Museum, at 907a Whitehead Street.

Schools of dolphins inhabit the waters around Key West, and there are several small companies who will take you out to find theses magic creatures in their natural habitat. So when you are not on the beach, swimming, or on the reef, or in one of the many bars, here is Key West, amusing, interesting, and entertaining like a fairytale.
