Menorca is one of those few paradises on the earth that has survived threw the crowds and systematic buildings.
It is a place that can never fail to visit at least once in life. Although, if you visit this place of enchantment and magic, you would like to visit it once again. The best way to get acquainted with this Mediterranean treasure is renting a catamaran, a boat or even a yacht and sail among its coasts and enjoy postcard landscapes, pristine beaches, excellent recipes and cultural richness.
Sailing to the north coast of Menorca we arrive to Mahon, Menorca's capital. The domes and yellow towers of the city go beyond off a cliff and overlook the sea. This natural harbor was the target of many foreign invasions because of its importance as a commercial center. There are a lot of places of interest in Mahon. After docking in port, you can wander through the city center to visit the Museum, the bastion of Sant Roc or the Church of Santa Maria. Close to Mahon are found the Albufera of Grau and Lighthouse Favaritz whose lovely relief can be admired from the sea. If you decide to rent a boat in Mallorca in summer, it will be the right time to attend the International Opera Festival in Mahon. It is a real pleasure to listen to the music in the streets of this city.
Es Castell is located just in 5 kilometers from Mahon. It is the easternmost town in Menorca, with incredible sunsets. Said to be the first place in Spain that gets the sunlight every morning. It is a beautiful fishing village with British style. Britain ruled there in the eighteenth century. The harbor entrance is dominated by the Castle of San Felipe, a Spanish fort built in XVI century. The streets are very narrow with a military style structure that open slope to the bay, between the boats of colors dotting the blue sea. There are plenty of taverns, cafes and terraces that expand on the docks in the summer. On our rented sailboat we can visit the bay Cala de San Esteve that is located in about 3 km from Es Castell. Fort Marlborough built in eighteenth century is also worth to be visited.
Northbound and along the coast of Menorca, we find the beautiful Natural Park Albufera des Graw. A key point for biosphere reserve on the planet featuring a large 5000 acres of protected land which include species of waterfowl and raptors. Es Grau is the town that is nestled in the Natural Park and the Mediterranean. A sea enclosed bay with a wide beach approximately 600 meters long and 35 meters wide. Es Grau is a pleasant fishing village, whose wharves still be found who are specialized in lobster fishing. Overlooking the bay of Es Grau is Isla Colom, that bizarrely was put up for sale by a Spanish agency in Britain. The island has two magnificent beaches and cliffs proud leaning towards the sea. Earlier it’s inhabitants dedicated to livestock and crop.
Fornells is the beautiful and picturesque town on the north of the island of Menorca. White houses are dotting the blue sea on characterizing this postcard. Thanks to the quiet atmosphere and friendly attitude of inhabitants to strangers, this village has gained fame among tourists in recent years. Fornells has exquisite seaside restaurants specializing in the preparation of tasty fish and seafood dishes. Around Fornells, that is considered Marine Nature Reserve, there are beautiful beaches where you can moor the rental catamaran or sailboat and enjoy quiet and untouched places.
On the western side of the island, is located Ciutadella - the second largest city after the capital of Menorca Island, Mahon. Ciutadela possesses rich architectural heritage of manor style of the time when the city was an enclave port of many sea voyages. Among all places of interest the Cathedral built in XIII and the Castle of San Nicolas can be named. The port has the fame of center of exquisite restaurants with a highest reputation. In the bay Cala Ciudadela, which is named after the city, you can anchor the rental boat and enjoy an idyllic corner without crowds. Another cove where you can also anchor the boat is the Cala Galdana, where you can find only a small little bar. If you decide to take a walk through the trail you’ll reach the small cove Cala Macarelleta.
The Cala Galdana mentioned above is a wide and open bay with family atmosphere, offering all necessary services from the youngest to the oldest. There you can find a lot of shops, kiosks, bars and restaurants, where you can find all necessary if you are short out of something during the trip.
La Cala Binibequer is one of the best known of Menorca’s bays situated in the municipality of San Luis, south of Mahon. It is a famous tourist place due to fine white sand that contrasts with turquoise water. It has coastal maritime access and different services such as bars, restrooms, chairs and Red Cross. Binibequer is a small fishing village, whose name in Spanish is Binebeca, with completely restored streets and whitewashed houses where silence is a sign of identity. This is the perfect spot before saying goodbye to our wonderful sailing trip around the beautiful Menorca.
